Frequently Asked Questions

What is chiropractic care?

It’s a natural method of health care that focuses on treating the causes of health problems, rather than just treating the symptoms. Chiropractic is based on a simple but powerful premise. Your body is better able to heal itself when it has a normally functioning spine and healthy nerve system,. That’s because your spine is the lifeline of your nervous system. It controls feeling, movement, and all function through your body.

How does chiropractic work?

Chiropractic works by restoring your body’s inborn ability to be healthy. The nervous system controls all the cells, tissues, and organs of your body. Proper communication makes the body resist disease. The chiropractic approach to better health is to locate blocked energy flow in the nervous system and restore it by making specific corrections to the spine.

How does Zone Healing work?

There are only six functional systems that your nervous system controls. There are specific centers in the brain that directly stimulate each system to restore proper signaling within that zone. Your body has an inborn wisdom that knows how to heal injuries, infections as well as any other thing that negatively affects your health. The specific analysis determines the zone/s that are not functioning properly. The specific treatment is to stimulate the brain center by treating the proper sequence of spinal segments associated with that zone. For more information please watch Dr. Lewis’ video.

Are all patients adjusted the same way?

No. Dr. Lewis uses her Body Detective analysis to evaluate the underlying cause of each patient’s health concern and develops an individual course of care. Each chiropractic adjustment builds on the one before. The resulting recommendations are based upon years of training and experience. Each patient’s care is uniquely different from every other patient.

What is a Zone Healing treatment?

Dr. Lewis first analyzes the reflex points on the back of your head. She then stimulates the four specific spinal levels that stimulate the center of the brain that controls the zone that is disturbed or blocking proper energy flow in your body.

Do you take x-rays?

Dr. Lewis does not take x-rays in her office. Her Body Detective analysis does not require x-rays. If she feels that you need x-rays she will refer you to a state of the art imaging center to take digital x-rays which are safer.

What is a chiropractic adjustment?

A chiropractic adjustment is the art of using a specific force in a precise direction, applied to a joint that is subluxated, misaligned or blocking proper flow of energy within the nervous system. Dr. Lewis is a “non-force” type of Chiropractor. She does not twist, pop or crack the joints. She uses a gentle adjusting instrument to make corrections.

Can I tell if I have a subluxation?

Not always. A subluxation is like a dental cavity–you may have it for a long time before symptoms appear. That’s why periodic spinal checkups are so important. Although it may be possible to know you have a subluxation, it is rarely possible to be sure you don’t. Regular spinal checkups are always a good idea, and they promote good health from the inside out.

Do children need chiropractic care?

Since significant spinal trauma can occur at birth, many parents have their newborns checked for vertebral subluxation. Naturally, chiropractic adjusting procedures are adapted for the child’s spine. Many childhood health complaints that are brushed off can be traced to blocked energy flow within the nervous system. Health problems that emerge in adulthood could often be prevented by having your children’s spine checked by a chiropractor early. Most parents report that their children enjoy their chiropractic adjustments and are healthier than their peers.

Is chiropractic safe?

Yes. Chiropractic has an excellent safety record. It is the result of a conservative and natural approach to health that avoids invasive procedures or addictive drugs. There is some concern that twisting and cracking the neck can cause stroke. Dr. Lewis never twists the neck and cracks it. She works with the neck in a neutral position and gently taps the bones back in place.

Is it OK to see a chiropractor if I’m pregnant?

Absolutely! Pregnant mothers find that chiropractic adjustments improve their pregnancy and make delivery easier for themselves and their baby. Dr. Lewis has a special pillow that allows mom to comfortably lie face down for treatment.

Can a person who had back surgery see a chiropractor?

Yes. It’s an unfortunate fact that up to half of those who had spinal surgery experience a return of their original symptoms months or years later. Dr. Lewis uses her Body Detective analysis to determine the source of the pain – which may not have been addressed by the surgery.

Can I adjust myself?

No. Since a chiropractic adjustment is a specific force, applied in a specific direction to a specific joint, it is virtually impossible to adjust oneself correctly and accurately. It is possible to turn or bend or twist in certain ways to create a “popping” sound that sometimes accompanies a chiropractic adjustment. Unfortunately, this type of joint manipulation is usually counterproductive, often making an already unstable spine even more unstable, and can sometimes be dangerous. Adjusting the spine is not for amateurs!

Does chiropractic work for all types of health problems?

No, however chiropractic care is successful with a very wide variety of health problems not necessarily considered “back” problems. Your nervous system controls digestion, allergies, hormones, neurotransmitters, your immune system and more. Dr. Lewis’ ISET method is beneficial for many types of health problems. It is worth finding out if your body can heal itself.

What type of education do chiropractic doctors receive?

Doctors of Chiropractic are well educated. Chiropractic education and medical education are similar in many respects and different in others because chiropractors do not prescribe drugs or perform surgery, and medical doctors do not correct nervous system function via the spine. After graduating with a Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.) Degree, each candidate passes their state board licensing exams before being granted the privilege to practice. A chiropractor’s education, however, never ends. The state of California requires a minimum of 12 hours of postgraduate instruction for license renewal, but Dr. Lewis takes far more trainings every year to stay current on the latest research and healing techniques.
