Anesthesia in Children Linked to Learning Disabilities

by Dr. Julia Lewis on November 15, 2011

Mayo Clinic Research study confirms that multiple surgeries with general anesthesia causes those children to have almost twice the risk of having learning disabilities later in childhood. Every year millions of babies and toddlers undergo surgery for tubes in their ears, hernia repair and life saving procedures. This study will be published in the November, 2011 issue of the Journal Pediatrics.

The Mayo Clinic published a similar study in 2009 in the Journal Anesthesiology where they found children with multiple surgeries up to the age of 4 had similar learning disabilities.  This was the first complete study in humans that found that anesthesia might affect brain development.  If the brain does not develop properly, then it can make learning more difficult.

Their 2011 study focused on children up to 2-years-old.  36.6% of those with multiple surgeries developed a learning disability later in life.  23.6% with just one surgery developed a learning disability while 21.2% with no surgery did.

There have been other research studies on humans that show general anesthesia affects the entire brain.  Clearly it does not matter if one is your or old – general anesthesia can have lasting side effects for some.  Another thing to consider with these children who had surgeries is they most likely had repeated antibiotic use as well.  Since antibiotics also have side effects that impact cognition it is important to understand these drugs can have lasting side effects too.

General anesthesia is necessary for many surgeries.  The medical community does not have a solution for these side effects, even though there have been improvements to lessen them.

Alyson had surgery as a child, oral surgery in her 20s then foot surgery in her 40s.  After her foot surgery she noticed she had lost her mental edge.  She couldn’t focus or recall information like she could before the foot surgery.  She just thought she was “getting old”.  When she found out about the side effects of general anesthesia she began to wonder if that was her problem.  She was thrilled after her treatments with me to help her body naturally release the chemical toxins affecting her ability to think.

It took three exposures to general anesthesia for Alyson to start noticing the side effects.  Perhaps she could have been even sharper when she was younger.  Had she not learned about my treatment protocols for helping the body to naturally detoxify the effects of general anesthesia, drugs and other toxic chemicals, she would still be stuck in her brain fog.

If you know anyone who has had multiple surgeries please tell them about the Mayo Clinic studies and invite them to give me a call to schedule a complimentary, no obligation Toxicity Evaluation to make sure that their body is free of side effects from the general anesthesia.

General anesthesia appears to have lasting side effects for up to 20% of those who receive it.  I am not criticizing the use of it.  I am offering a solution for people suffering from the side effects.  There is no drug solution for a drug-induced problem.

I am here to help those who can’t naturally bounce back after general anesthesia.  The people I’ve treated report improvement in their mental abilities.  Perhaps I can help you or someone you know as well.  Use the contact form on the side or call my office to schedule an appointment.

Sometimes surgery can’t be avoided. All you can do is minimize the anesthesia exposure, but clearly you don’t
want your son to be in pain during the surgery.

At least you will know that there is a possibility that the anesthesia could
have side effects based on the research.
