A five-year study in France links pesticide exposure to memory loss, cognitive decline and neurological diseases. Vineyard workers in southwest France who had long-term exposures to pesticides participated in a study to determine if there was any decline in their mental/cognitive function.

The study found that individuals exposed to pesticides on the job are more likely than their unexposed peers to experience a decline in cognitive function as they age.

“The mild impairment we observed raises the question of…possible evolution towards neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias,” writes Isabelle Baldi, MD, from the Université Victor Ségalen Bordeaux 2 in Bordeaux, France, and colleagues.

The study was published online December 2, 2010 in Occupational and Environmental Medicine.

The researchers gave the workers various cognitive performance tests and compared them to the general French population of the same age. They first tested them in 1997 and 1998 then again five years later. Initially the workers exposed to pesticides performed significantly below the general population and performed even worse five years later.

Breathing, swallowing and absorbing the pesticides through the skin allows toxic chemicals to get into the brain and cause damage. If this is happening to people working with pesticides on the job, how could the foods we eat with chemical residues be affecting us?

In a study led by Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, in collaboration with the Environmental Working Group and Commonwealth, researchers at two major laboratories conducted a study on nine volunteers. This volunteer group consisted of individuals who were not exposed to chemicals in their work environment nor lived near an industrial facility. The results were quite remarkable.

The researchers discovered an average of 91 industrial compounds, pollutants and other chemicals in the volunteer’s blood and urine and a total of 167 chemicals. Of the 167 chemicals found, 76 cause cancer in humans or animals. 94 are toxic to the brain and nervous system. 79 cause birth defects or abnormal development.

Since most cognitive decline is gradual, what are we unknowingly exposed to that could affect our memory, ability to problem solve or perform the normal tasks at work?

I am a Body Detective Chiropractor. I offer a risk-free evaluation to determine if someone’s brain is being affected by pesticides or other toxic chemicals like formaldehyde, lead and ammonia. Find out how chemicals can cause an allergy or sensitivity and how sometimes chemicals become more toxic to the body.

My complimentary toxin analysis could bring you peace of mind knowing your brain is doing just fine, or give you the chance to be proactive and do something about it if it is not. All it will cost you is your time.
