According to an April 2011 article in U.S. News & World Report, Medical Schools are recognizing the importance of alternative and complementary therapies now that 40 percent of American adults swear by these natural healing methods.
UCSF offered a two-week elective to its fourth-year students that covered topics from acupuncture to mind-body medicine to herbs. These students’ traditional studies of drugs and surgery far outweigh alternative choices. Since they realize their patients will be demanding complementary medicine, they want to be familiar with the alternative methods that work.
The University of Maryland School of Medicine has a fourth-year elective that emphasizes the importance of caring for the mind, body and spirit of the physician as well as the patients. “Students recognize that, to be good healers, they need to facilitate their own wellness, that [it’s] is a part of healing a patient,” according to Delia Chiaramonte, director of education for the school’s Center for Integrative Medicine.
When I decided to become a Chiropractor I was using herbs and supplements to be healthy. I was exploring more natural ways to restore health and stay that way. In my 20+ year journey I’ve learned the importance of addressing the mind-body aspect of healing for my own wellness. I’ve found that in some cases the body can’t fully heal until the mind does.
Over the years, I have treated many people who were injured in car accidents. Some just had physical injuries while some had emotional fears in addition to their physical injuries. Both types of symptoms disturb and often choke down the normal energy flow in the nervous system. I am an expert at identifying how the emotional fears are blocking vital energy and then I get the energy moving properly again.
Recently one of my patient’s was a passenger in a car that got totaled when it was hit on her side. Every time she rode in a car after that accident she was quite nervous and afraid. I was able to identify and restore the blocked energy flow in just one session. That treatment fully returned her joy of riding in a car and erased her fears caused by the accident. Her daughter was thrilled because she was driving and felt responsible for her mom’s upset. They both recovered from their physical injuries quickly.

Medical Schools are just now beginning to embrace what Chiropractic has known and practiced for over 100 years. It is refreshing to know that MDs are listening and are adapting to giving their patients better health choices. I am happy to work with MDs and other health care practitioners to help their patients and clients regain their health and mind-body balance.
